  4. Welcome to the zoo!  The zoo is full of strange and unusual

  6. animals from all over the world.  The first "modern" zoo
  7.  
  8. was founded in Vienna, Austria in 1751.  Early zoos were
  9.  
  10. no better than prison cells for the animals.  Often caged by
  11.  
  12. themselves behind iron bars, they had little room to move about
  13.  
  14. and interact with other members of their species.  Times have
  15.  
  16. changed, however, and in many zoos, bars have given way to large
  17.  
  18. natural, wilderness areas.  Now animals can live more active,
  19.  
  20. normal lives and hopefully produce more young.  Zoos work very
  21.  
  22. hard to keep dwindling species of animals alive through
  23.  
  24. breeding programs.  Many zoos also have "adopt an animal" programs
  25.  
  26. to raise money for the care of different species.
